Digital camera, which is commonly known as a digicam, refers to a multi-media device which assists in capturing photographs and videos digitally. Unlike a film camera, digital camera uses charged coupled device (CCD) for capturing images that are stored in an electronic format of the memory card. This eradicates the film process, i.e., the requirement of developing a film-roll in the dark room. A digital camera also offers the flexibility of deleting and retrieving an image from the memory, without the requirement of getting it printed. Often, still images/video clips can be simultaneously viewed over the display screen and transferred to other devices via USB cable or an inbuilt Wi-Fi system. In addition to this, a digital camera helps the user in performing elementary image editing. Some of the other specialised functions offered by a digital camera include auto focus, shutter speed, panorama view, best-shot selector and exposure control.
In the year 1975, Steve Sasson, a Kodak electrical engineer, produced the world’s first prototype of a digital camera. He produced this device using parts of the other cameras. Presently, the demand for digital camera is declining due to its integration with other devices like smartphones, laptops and vehicles. As per the research analysts at IMARC Group, the global digital camera market was worth US$ 18.6 Billion in 2017.

Manufacturers of the digital camera are constantly witnessing challenges from smartphone firms on account of technological improvements which are emerging in the inbuilt camera of smartphones and other devices. In comparison with a digital camera, the sales of smartphones are witnessing a strong growth. This can be attributed to the easy accessibility of a smartphones for capturing images. Moreover, smartphones, being a necessity of the modern world, are carried by people to almost every place as they offer innumerable functions like calling, texting, entertainment, etc. On the other hand, a digital camera, which serves only one purpose of taking pictures and videos, is associated with several working complexities which make its demand decline amongst amateur photography enthusiasts. Apart from this, lack of innovations from the manufacturers’ end is failing in intriguing new consumers as well as old consumers. Further, the rise of the rental system services is contributing to the diminishing sales in the digital camera market.
